It's Real: Starting Your Own Business

posted by Custom Craftworks on February 28, 2018

No matter where you work, it's likely that you've dreamed at least once or twice (or maybe a few million times!) about being your own boss—and it's no different in massage therapy

This blog was curated from an article written by Terry Russell for Massage Today in June 2015 titled "Important Tips for Starting Your New Massage Therapy Business." The original article can be found here.

Putting yourself in charge of your own career doesn't have to be just a dream. You can make it a reality. And the secret to success comes down to one little word: managementBy focusing on managing the five areas below, you will be able to move your dream into a reality!

Be sure that you have enough capital and cash flow to make it on your own. On the personal side, get your spending habits under control, and consider if this truly is the right time to launch a business, especially if you are carrying credit card or other debt. To ensure your spending doesn't get out of control, be sure to set a budget- a personal budget and a business budget, but be sure it is realistic and obtainable.

Time management is another area to be taken quite seriously. In the earliest of stages you should be writing a business plan. This will be the roadmap on how and when you get to that opening day. It is an essential tool for business success. A well thought out business plan should project out three to five years, outlining where you are going and how you plan to get there. By planning this far out, you should be up and running by the end of this plan and ready for you to start a growth business plan. Once out into the open, you will find it easier to not only achieve your goals but may very well exceed your goals!

It is time to start thinking of you as a brand today. Your hands, your modalities your style all become what your brand will stand for in the future. While logos and snappy sayings get your attention, a true, authentic brand will withstand the test of time.

How do you get the word out to potential customers? You have been very vocal to your friends and family about this new venture but you can only work on this segment so long before you realize the bigger money is outside this circle. Advertising can become very expensive. One way to take advantage of advertising is through free advertising outlets. You don't have to look very hard to find great sources. Chances are you already have a network built through social media. Take advantage of free accounts, pages and blogs offered through various social media outlets. Keep your name out there and in a positive light as much as possible. Don't be afraid to promote yourself!

Customer service

It's time to set yourself apart. Once your business has launched, keep those customers by offering outstanding customer service and listening to their concerns. Be sure to service your clients with enthusiasm. While keeping that positive attitude remain sincere to yourself. After all, your brand is at stake.

Whether you are ready to start that new venture today or just dreaming of the day you hang that "open for business sign", know that you can do it with a little planning, a lot of hard work and believing in yourself. Every company starts as a dream!
